How Small Businesses Can Reach Millions for Free on Social Media

Share:

Social media is making it very easy for small businesses to grow and make a lot of money for almost free.

Before now, it was nearly impossible to reach 1,000,000 people if you’ve small number of followers, but today, with the implementation of discovery algorithms, even with 3,000 followers, your content can now be seen by over 1,000,000 users.

Crazy, isn’t it?

Before now, the interactive nature of social media was friend to friends, to followers. With only a tiny percentage of people outside that circle to see your content.

But right now, the system shows your content to more people who are not even connected to your account.

What does this mean for small businesses?

One of the accounts under our company’s control with 21,046 now reaches over 15,000,000 users monthly and this has helped to slim down our cost of advertising.

As a business owner, refine your content to focus more on strangers. Since more than 70% of those that consume your content are non-followers, won’t it be nicer to target then and bring them into your circle?

In all your posts, there should always be a call to action that allows those non-followers to connect deeper with you. You may not always be in the algorithm’s good book to give you such free promotions.

Avoid any form of restriction. Violating any of the platform’s policies is no like travel a journey of 40 days for 400 years like the Israelites in the good book, the Bible.

Your account must be RECOMMENDABLE. I encourage you to take your time to study the different policies.

You’re a content marketer not a content creator. Your content should be focused on priming and positioning “you” brand as a go-to person for that which you represent and want to be remembered for.

This can only be achieved IF your content focuses on three core aspects; the problem your audience are facing, the results they want to get, and your solution as the vehicle to drive their results.

  1. I am a young compliance agent, a CAC accredited agent, wishing to reach millions of business/companies to register/ do other compliance services. How can I receive help in terms of reaching out to people.

    • Great to hear that! Our company has two options that can greatly help you. You can hire us—reach out to us here: mypwu.com/contact, or we can train you on how to achieve it yourself. For training, contact Ella via email at ella@mypwu.com.ng.

  2. I’d like to add that one underrated way small businesses can maximize this free organic reach is by leveraging collaborations. Partnering with other brands or influencers in a similar niche can expose your content to even more non-followers, which accelerates audience growth.

    • Absolutely! Collaborations are a powerful way to expand organic reach. Partnering with influencers or complementary brands can introduce your content to a fresh audience while boosting credibility. Another great strategy is user-generated content—encouraging your audience to create and share content about your brand can multiply your visibility without spending a dime. Thanks for bringing this up!

  3. This is an interesting perspective! You emphasized refining content for strangers since most viewers are non-followers. But don’t you think businesses should also focus on nurturing their existing audience to build a loyal community rather than just chasing new reach? Would love to hear your take on balancing both!

    • I agree with you. Nurturing an existing audience is just as important as attracting new ones. However, the reality is that most platforms are designed to push content to new viewers, so businesses must adapt. The best approach is a mix—create content that hooks strangers while also keeping existing followers engaged through exclusive content, behind-the-scenes updates, and direct interactions like live sessions.

  4. Wow, this is an eye-opener! You mentioned that accounts with a small following can now reach millions due to discovery algorithms. But how exactly do these algorithms determine which content to push out? Is it based purely on engagement, or are there other hidden factors that influence reach?

    • The discovery algorithms prioritize content based on several factors, not just engagement. While likes, shares, and comments play a major role, other hidden factors include watch time (for videos), dwell time (how long people stay on a post), consistency of posting, and even the type of content (e.g., native posts vs. external links). The most important factor is to create content that keeps people engaged and encourages interaction.
